/ Idee: Jonathan David Petch /

The concept of the exhibition is to present unrealised artistic ideas with particular connections and relationships between art, economics and/or science.

Economics and science are primarily concerned with the myth of certainty whereas art is quite simply "other" with its shape shifting ambivalence - a generator of endless uncertainty.

After completing an honours degree in finance and economics at the Newcastle upon Tyne Business School in 1990, Jonathan Petch trained as a chartered accountant at the head office of Arthur Andersen in London between 1991 and 1994. He subsequently worked as a chartered accountant for both BNP Paribas and Baring Brothers & Co. merchant bank in the City, after which he worked in similar roles for Total Oil and Carlton Communications plc.

Good business is the best art of all but in October 1999 Jonathan Petch went from business to art and now his intention is to combine business and art to make business art. Fundamentally, economics is concerned with producing maximum profit for minimum input. In the first stage of his exhibition project, for the fee of ¤100 Jonathan Petch appropriated this precept in the work which he submitted as part 1 of his project - a work which places the recipient in an awkward space, somewhere between amusement and discomfort, enquiry and playfulness, delight and pessimism.

For the second stage of his project for the exhibition, he proposes to create a web page on which visitors may view his work for a prepaid fee of ¤10 (payable by PayPal to his bank account) - the same work which you received at 16:45pm on 23.01.2007.

Please find attached an example of how the artist suggests the final web page could look.

With very best regards,

Jonathan Petch B.A. (honours), A.C.A.
